Snow Kachina

The Snow Kachina is a favorite character during the winter months. Because he lives on top of the San Francisco Peaks he is credited with bringing the cold and snows to the Hopis. This winter moisture is absolutely essential for the growth of the crops. Hence Nuvak' china appears in many winter ceremonies, the Soyal, Powamu, Palolokongti and the Mixed Dances of early spring.

Since he is intimately associated with water, there is an alliance between him and the Water Serpent. Thus we find him dancing at a spring that belongs to the Water Serpent and must be cleaned out. Many times the Snow Kachina distributes presents on the morning of the Bean Dance.
